What you need to know as an Honours supervisor |
Q8. What should I do if I suspect plagiarism?
Students must submit their own individual and unassisted work for assessment. Where material used by a student is not their own work (in whole or in part), the student must acknowledge the source in accordance with the Acknowledgement Practice/ Plagiarism policy. Where you suspect that a student may be guilty of plagiarism you should discuss the matter with the head of your academic unit. The head (or nominee) may investigate the allegation in accordance with the University's Rules for Student Conduct and Discipline.
Disciplinary action may also be taken against students who attempt to avoid assessment requirements using unauthorised means (eg by forging or altering a medical certificates to support a special consideration application).
Note: Supervisors have a role to play in educating students about how to acknowledge correctly and thereby avoid plagiarism.
