What you need to know as an Honours supervisor

Q1. What are my specific responsibilities as a supervisor?

The overriding responsibility of a supervisor is to provide continuing support to students in researching and producing a project report or thesis to the best of the student's ability.

The supervisor must be familiar with the information in the Honours Guide produced by their Faculty/Academic Unit as well as with the general rules pertaining to the specific honours degree and the Code of Practice – Honours.

The specific responsibilities of a supervisor are defined in Section 3 of the Code of Practice – Honours. They include

  • support students in developing a proposal for their research project or thesis within a negotiated time frame
  • assist students to develop a plan for completing the project or thesis within an appropriate time frame
  • maintain regular contact with students in order to monitor their progress
  • provide timely and helpful written feedback to students on any submissions and to assist them to develop solutions as problems are identified
  • advise students of inadequate progress or work below the standard generally required and to suggest appropriate action

Supervisors act as both mentor and academic adviser. In this capacity, they are required to advise students about their rights and responsibilities, including assisting students to acknowledge sources correctly (i.e. avoid plagiarism) and to comply with occupational health and safety and ethics requirements where relevant.

In addition, supervisors are required to attend meetings of the academic unit assessment committee where students' grades are determined.
