What you need to know as an Honours Supervisor

Q10. What is my role in the determination of final marks?

This will depend on the weighting of the honours project and your particular academic unit's policy.

Research Project > or = 24cp
Where an Honours Project has a weighting of 24 credit points or more, the role of the supervisor may be limited to forwarding marks for coursework components to the relevant assessment committee for final declaration of mark. The assessment reports from the examiners and the marks recorded for the Honours project should be forwarded directly by the Head of the Academic Unit (or nominee) to the Assessment Committee. At that stage, the Assessment Committee, may seek input from the supervisor. The supervisor is a voting member of the Assessment committee.

Research Project < 24cp
Where a research project is worth less than 24 credit points, you should consult your own faculty guidelines about your role in the determination of final marks.

In either case, the supervisor is required to attend meetings of the academic unit assessment committee where students' grades are determined.
