What you need to know as an Honours Supervisor
Q8. What should I do if I suspect plagiarism?
Students must submit their own individual and unassisted work for assessment. Where material used by a student is not their own work (in whole or in part), the student must acknowledge the source in accordance with the Acknowledgement Practice/Plagiarism policy.
Where you suspect that a student is guilty of plagiarism you should bring this to the attention of the Subject Coordinator as soon as possible, providing them with relevant information and evidence relating to the allegation. The Subject Coordinator will investigate the allegation in accordance with the University's Student Conduct Rules and accompanying Procedures.
Similarly, a student is prohibited from cheating during an examination or test and the Subject Coordinator will investigate allegations of cheating during an examination or test.
Disciplinary action may also be taken for other forms of academic misconduct such as fraud, fabrication and misrepresentation.
Note: Supervisors have a role to play in educating students about how to acknowledge correctly and thereby avoid plagiarism.
