Sustainable research excellence through postgraduate training at ISEM

Presented by Professor Shi Xue DOU
Institute for Superconducting and Electronic Materials (ISEM)

> Hear and View Professor Dou's presentation

Professor DouThe Institute for Superconducting and Electronic Materials (ISEM) has built an interdisciplinary research capability on advanced materials and technology. It consists of 30 academic and research staff (including 11 various level ARC fellows), 35 postgraduate students and more than 10 visiting staff  working in world-class laboratories. ISEM has six research programs: applied superconductivity, energy materials, spintronic materials, thin film technology, nanomaterials and optoelectronics, and established a collaborative network with more than 50 research groups in Australia and overseas.

This presentation will focus on the policy and progress of postgraduate training at ISEM. Postgraduates have been the driving force and major contributors to the sustainable growth of ISEM. The key strategies include encouraging independent research work, flexibility and the early start of a co-supervisor’s role for researchers to develop their research directions. ISEM also promotes the exchange of postgraduates and co-supervision with experts from other institutions. As a result, many its graduates were accepted by prestigious institutions worldwide.

S.X. Dou is an Australian Professorial Fellow at the Faculty of Engineering, UoW and Director of the Institute for Superconducting and Electronic Materials (ISEM). He was elected as a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Science and Engineering in 1994. He was awarded a PhD in solid state chemistry by the Dalhousie University, Canada in 1984 and DSc for his published work on high temperature superconductivity by the University of New South Wales in 1998. He was awarded ARC Senior Research fellowship in 1993, ARC Australian Professorial Fellowship in 2002 and 2007 respectively. He received the award of the Australian Government’s Centenary Medal for service to Australian Society in materials science and engineering in 2003 and the VC’s Senior Researcher Excellence Award in 2008.
