UOW’s standing as a world class research intensive university have been confirmed in the Australian Research Council’s 2015** Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) report revealing a marked increase in the number of disciplines delivering research rated as well above world standard.

The outcomes of the Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) in 2015 include:

  • 98% of UOW’s disciplines that were assessed in ERA 2015 were rated as “At”, “Above”, or “Well above world standard”.*
  • More than three quarters of UOW’s assessed disciplines were rated as “Above”, or “Well above world standard”.*
  • The number of UOW’s disciplines rated as “Well above world standard” has tripled since 2012.*

** The next round of ERA is scheduled to take place in 2018.


UOW’s long standing research strengths including engineering, mathematical sciences, chemical sciences and earth sciences, with 16 research areas in these groupings receiving the highest possible national rating. Our international reputation is enhanced through the contributions of the world-leading Intelligent Polymer Research Institute (IPRI), the Institute for Superconducting and Electronic Materials (ISEM), SMART Infrastructure Facility, the Illawarra Health and Medical Research Institute (IHMRI), and the innovative Australian Institute of Innovative Materials (AIIM)
