Volunteering at UOW

The Faces of Volunteering

UOW is ranked in the top 2 percent of universities in the world, thanks in part to the commitment of our volunteers.  UOW values our relationship with our alumni, volunteers and members of the community and the contribution they make to the University and our community.

The Graduate School of Medicine provides a fantastic example of the value of volunteers contributing to the University.  Students graduatung from the Graduate School of Medicine benefit from the commitment of more than 150 patient volunteers who gave up their time to assist in the training of these young doctors.

Alumni networks and groups across disciplines and regions contribute back to the University advising, mentoring and raising money for the benefit of our students
And from humble beginnings, these volunteers have become an integral part of our University, providing invaluable service for students and the greater community.

Illawarra Health & Medical Research Institute (IMHRI)

The Illawarra Health and Medical Research Institute (IHMRI) conducts a number of clinical trials throughout the year that the local community can be a part of .  Clinical trials held at IHMRI are selected for safety, support and links with disease prevalence in our region.  People participate in clinical trials for a range of reasons, including:

  • helping others, by contributing to the enhancement of medical knowledge and the development of new drugs and treatments;
  • personally playing a more active role in your own health;
  • receiving extensive and more closely supervised medical care associated with the clinical study;
  • obtaining the clinical study medicine or medical care at no cost, at least during the study; and
  • gaining early access to new medicines or treatments not otherwise available.

If you would like to express interest in participating in future trials, register your interest with IHMRI at http://ihmri.uow.edu.au/participate/index.html
