Brief Curriculum Vitae

Tim McCarthy joined the School of Civil Mining and Environmental Engineering in December 2004 having spent nearly 20 years as Lecturer and Senior Lecturer at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST which merged to form the University of Manchester in 2004).  He has worked on the design of offshore and onshore steel structures and has written a best selling text book, "AutoCAD Express" on the popular CAD program, AutoCAD.

In 2010 he was recognised with an Australian Learning and Teaching Citation for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning for leadership in curriculum and space design that fosters collaborative learning. He is also the recipient of a number of Nationally Competitive ALTC/OLT grants to research various aspects of Engineering Education.

In 2013 he led the student construction team which built “The Illawarra Flame” a net zero energy eco-house that won the Solar Decathlon China 2013 worldwide competition.

Engineering and Mathematics Education Research

Educating engineers is a challenging task.  The complexity and cost of modern construction projects mean that today's structural engineers must be much more than analysts.  They must have an holistic approach to problem solving coupled with a superb technical understanding.  In the university education of engineers, we constantly strive to understand the minute details while simultaneously grasping the big picture.  Through a range of teaching methods and on-line resources, we in the Faculty of Engineering at Wollongong are at the forefront in Engineering Education.

Shear.exe is a Computer Based Training module that I developed with students in Manchester.  It covers a description of shear stresses in structures, shear flow and shear centre.  You can download a personal copy by clicking this link. It is 1.8Mb in size and runs on most Windows based PCs.  This copy is for personal use and should not be distributed without permission.

Funding

Professor McCarthy's research prior to joining the University of Wollongong was mainly through EPSRC (the UK equivalent of ARC).  He works closely with industry and has a number of research students sponsored by Australian companies.  Click the link above for details of recent projects in Australia and UKThese range from Structural Steel Design, Concrete Technology to Commissioning and Qualification of Pharmaceutical Facilities. He is the recipient of a number of ALTC/OLT grants in the area of Engineering Education.

Thesis Supervision

Professor McCarthy has supervised and co-supervised 52 PhD's, MPhil and MSc theses.  Click the link for a full list of titles.  The main theme of this body of work is the application of advanced information technology to the solution of engineering problems.  In recent years, this has been supplemented by aspects of sustainable structural design.
