Abstract

This document is a structured set of notes on numerical integration approximation schemes focussed at university level mathematics. These notes can be used as a teaching aid for instructors and/or a learning manual for students. These notes provide the framework for the topic, where examples and exercises, also included, aim to develop the students conceptual understanding of numerical methods and how they can be applied to approximate integration

The methods in this case give an introduction to modern approximation techniques whilst giving insight to when, and how, these methods are most useful and appropriate.

Joanna Herrmann, MIN and Rodney van Bentum. October 2009. In this photograph we have Joanna Herrmann, MIN and Rodney van Bentum. I supervised Jo and Rod's honours projects in 2009. This photograph was taken on the last day of session (30th October) when the honours students were celebrating the end of teaching in the student bar. However, I am not sure why Jo and Rod were celebrating as they had not yet handed in their thesis!
