Dear students, a very warm welcome to Spring Session 2022! I hope you’re feeling rested and ready to get back into your studies and life on campus.
Student Social Events
There are lots of UOW Pulse events to attend, so be sure to get along to the ones that interest you. UOW Pulse are also happily trialling the supply of reusable plates, bowls and cutlery at their events in a bid to minimise single-use plastics and divert waste from landfill – go team!
UOW Respect Week with Grace Tame
We were very pleased yesterday to announce a brand-new event here at UOW focused on fostering diversity, inclusivity and connection. UOW Respect Week will begin on Friday 29 August, with five days of panel discussions, training opportunities and activities around the themes of cultural respect, sexual harassment and assault, equity, diversity and inclusion. There will also be a keynote speech from Grace Tame, 2021 Australian of the Year, taking place in the Uni Hall. All students are welcome to attend. Registrations open for this event on 1 August. We are so proud to be partnering with UOW’s Safe and Respectful Communities team and Grace to bring this powerful program to UOW – please get along if you can.
Student Experience Survey
You may have already heard that the 2022 Student Experience Survey (SES) is now open. The SES is an Australian government survey that compares the student experience offered at all Australian universities. We value student feedback and encourage you to take 10 minutes to have your say about the UOW student experience. All eligible students will have received an email to their UOWmail, or you can access the survey here. There’s Visa gift cards valued at $1000 up for grabs, and the earlier you complete it the more chances you have to win. The survey will close on 28 August.
UCI Road Cycling Championships – coming soon!
As you will know, the 2022 UCI Road World Championships are happening here in Wollongong from 18 – 25 September with plenty of great volunteer ambassador opportunities to be part of this important world event! You’ll be able to share your knowledge and love of Wollongong with visitors and join a team of fun and friendly people welcoming people from across the globe.
UOW Research Update
It has been a while since I last sent a research round-up from across UOW, so I thought I might welcome you back with a bit of a reminder of all the incredible work being done right on your doorstep:
- What’s in a vape and when will we know the health risks?
- How doing exercise could charge your devices
- UOW to be the headquarters of a new Australian Research Council training centre
- Could technology replace social institutions like religion, education and societal conventions in shaping our moral development?
- UOW students win New Team award at Enactus Australia National Competition (well done team!)
- Research collaboration provides unique overview of growing older with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa
That’s all from me for now. I hope your first week is off to a flying start. As always, stay safe, mask up and stay home if you’re feeling unwell.
My best,
Trish
