Dear students, what a joy it was to see our Wollongong campus in all its glory over the weekend. Thank you to all of our students who were involved in making Open Day the roaring success that it was.
The last few years have been really tough for universities and students, so the fact that a day like Open Day can go ahead and be such a triumph is certainly a sign of good things to come. I am so inspired by you our students, your resilience and your focus. I look forward to more events and successes to come during the second half of 2022!
UOW Respect Week – featuring Grace Tame and Lucy Smith
The next major event on the UOW calendar is our inaugural UOW Respect Week (29 Aug – 2 Sep). A week-long series of interactive events, activities and discussions around respect and diversity, including an afternoon with 2021 Australian of the Year Grace Tame and UOW alumni and Triple J host Lucy Smith.

I wanted to send another reminder about the Student Experience Survey. Every year we ask for feedback from our students, and every year our teaching and professional staff look for ways to implement the changes you’re asking for. As a University, we are only as good as the experiences and opportunities we offer our students, but we need your feedback. National Science Week at UOW (13-21 August)
Next week is National Science Week and with UOW’s proud history of science research and teaching, we have a number of activities for students to get involved in, including lab-tours of our Intelligent Polymer Research Institute at UOW’s Innovation Campus and also the annual Bill Wheeler Community Symposium on bionics research. Both events are free but be sure to register.
The Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH) is looking for students
Do you want to get involved in CUGH's student-led Global Health activities? There are opportunities to join CUGH’s Trainee Advisory Committee (TAC) and Campus Representatives Program (CRP). Students around the world work within CUGH to address global health challenges. Current issues they are working on include: COVID-19 and pandemic prevention; addressing equity, racial disparities, and diversity; climate change; gun violence; student debt and disinformation.
Live music at the UniBar
If you’re looking for some fun things to do with your evenings and weekends, I’d recommend having a look through the UniBar’s upcoming gigs and events. Having UniBar central at our Wollongong campus is very convenient for students, with fantastic student discounts, comedy, gigs and open mic nights.
Finally, I wanted to send Emma McKeon a very hearty congratulations on her incredible achievement in Birmingham. For those who don’t yet know, Emma has now broken the record for all-time Commonwealth Games medal holders, with 20 in total! Emma was part of the UOW Elite Athlete Mentoring Program in 2013 and was a UOW NAB Scholarship recipient in 2014, studying a Bachelor of Business. What an impressive woman!
