Dear students, time has been flying at UOW lately.
We’ve had so much excitement going on around campus, from the Antarctic Futures exhibition and seminars, Science Week on the whole, UOW hosting the International Labour Econometrics Workshop and of course, a fabulous end to last week with UOW Council and leadership team meeting for lunch with our wonderful Student Ambassadors. And there’s no sign of things slowing down either, which is great!
UOW Respect Week, 29 August – 2 September
Our inaugural UOW Respect Week begins this coming Monday and registrations are now open for a range of online and in-person forums, events and inclusive activities. The program is an opportunity for staff and students to grow and to hear more about perspectives you may not yet have come across. As an institution, we have a way to go, and this week is about coming together to have the hard yet important conversations, to raise awareness, to educate, to listen and learn. Liz Hilton Memorial Fellowship – scholarship to undertake research using the UOW Archives
The University of Wollongong received a generous bequest of $250,000 from the estate of the late Elisabeth Hilton (1939 - 2020). Liz, as she was affectionately known, made an extraordinary impact on the lives of many as a committed UOW staff member, passionate advocate, honorary Fellow, dedicated volunteer, and donor. In celebration of Liz’s contribution to UOW, we are inviting applications for the Liz Hilton Memorial Fellowship, valued at $7000 for current UOW students to undertake research using the collections housed in the UOW Archives. UOW expert answering sex-related questions on Triple J’s The Hook Up
UOW’s very own Dr Theresa Larkin from the School of Medicine was on Triple J’s The Hook Up on Sunday night. She answered the Triple J audience’s sex-related questions alongside Dr Karl. From why we’re attracted to certain smells in other people, to how female hormones change during pregnancy, it was a very interesting listen and an excellent example of the wonderful and varying expertise we have here. Sexual health and related questions are so important to have answered by the experts.
Moving toward renewables!
Just wanted to share a happy news story I came across the other day. On Friday, for the first time during normal everyday circumstances, solar energy eclipsed coal as the leading source of power across the energy market for about 30 minutes. Most of the power came from rooftop solar panels, and it’s fantastic to hear energy experts saying that this is a sign of things to come!
The kindness revolution will save the world
And finally, a book titled, The Kyoto Post-COVID Manifesto for Global Economics: Confronting Our Shattered Society, by UOW Emeritus Professor, Stephen Hill AM, has launched and I can’t wait to read it. In his own words, Professor Hill suggests that after the last two to three years “we need to focus on a future ruled by our humanity rather than self-interest.” His book offers a way of doing this. Kindness really cannot be underrated.
