Our lab

What to expect

Our Infant Learning Lab is located at Early Start at the University of Wollongong.

What does a visit to our lab typically look like?

  • We may ask parents to record the babies' movements at home, things like tummy time and rolling!
  • Your little one will get to explore a new space, and we'll observe all the exciting things they get up to
  • Babies can also be chatty, so we will audio-record some of their babbles and goo-gas
  • After all their talking and exploring, we'll then want to see how their little brains remember tasks
  • We're also interested in what it's like to read with your baby, especially as they get increasingly mobile

If this sounds like something you would be interested in or would like to have more information about, please fill out the Research Interest Form.

How long does a lab visit take?

One hour in total.

What is the study time commitment?

At the moment, we only ask families to come in for one lab visit. There also might be some video tasks to complete at home which will take about 15 minutes.

What days are lab visits?

We currently complete lab visits on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. We offer flexible times that can fit around any feeding or nap-time schedules!

Do I get anything for taking part?

We will give your little one a certificate for taking part, a magnet, pen, and a $10 book voucher.

How old does my baby have to be?

We see 6, 9, 12 and 18-month olds. We aim to see babies within a 4-week timeframe. For example, if you're baby will be 6-months old on the 15/3/19, the timeframe would be 1/3/19 - 29/3/19. If your baby is younger than 6-months, you can still sign up for the study - we will just wait until they are the right age to schedule a visit.

Where do I park?

We will meet you at the loading bay/car park and walk you to the lab which is just above the Early Start Discovery Space. Please view the parking instructions.

Do I have to dress my baby in anything particular?

No, just dress them in a comfortable outfit of your choice.

Can I bring my toddler?

We understand that it can be difficult to arrange childcare, which is why we try to be as flexible as possible when arranging lab visits. Although we can't offer childcare here, we have completed lab visits with a sibling (around 2 - 3 years old) present. Your little one might get distracted by their big brother or sister, but we have plenty of toys to keep your older child entertained while we focus our attention on your youngest. If you think that you'll have to bring another child with you, just let us know and we will be happy to arrange something that suits your family.

Will photos or videos of my child be shared on your website and social media?

All of the photos we share on our website and social media are ones that families have seen and approved for media use. Photos are taken after your session is compete if you are interested and if your baby is still happy to play with us. Photos are not required. Videos taken during the study are for research purposes. Approval would be sought from you if we would like to show your child's video to people outside our lab for research or teaching purposes (e.g., at conferences or in our developmental psychology course). No personal information will be shared.
