A robot welding material

Micro-credential: Introduction to Welding Robot Programming

Combine theoretical learning with practical engagement and hands-on experience to safely operate and program a welding robot.

Course overview

In this course, you will become familiar with the general methods of operating industrial robots, including an awareness of the safety and risk assessments that surround robotic welding applications. You will learn to program a robot through several techniques, including point-to-point teaching, manual programming and computer generated programming; and become familiar with work piece positioning for optimal welding conditions.

For more information please contact Professor Zengxi (Stephen) Pan, Academic Program Director, Mechatronics by email zengxi@uow.edu.au.

This microcredential has been developed by our expert staff from the Facility for Intelligent Fabrication (FIF) at the University of Wollongong, in partnership with Weld Australia and in collaboration with Verbotics.

At the completion of the Introduction to Welding Robot Programming micro-credential, you will be able to:

  • Understand the process, parameters, and requirements of successful welding
  • Safely power up the robot in the proper sequence
  • Demonstrate how to jog the robot in the joint coordinate system while observing safety considerations and robot limitations
  • Demonstrate basic programming, management, and optimisation of the welding process

On successful completion of this micro-credential, you will be awarded with a digital credential.

Introduction to Welding Robot Programming will be delivered in-person on the University of Wollongong's main campus in Wollongong. Training will combine theoretical learning with practical hands-on lessons in our industrial robotic welding cells.

To be eligible for this course you must:

  • Have some prior welding experience and understand welding techniques.
  • Be available to attend all five teaching sessions.

By registering for the micro-credential you acknowledge that you meet the eligibility criteria and understand the requirement to attend all five training days.

Some occupations that would benefit from this micro-credential:

  • Metal fabricators
  • Boiler workers
  • Machine operators
  • Welders
