English language requirements

To gain entry to UOW, you need to demonstrate that you meet the UOW English language requirements for your chosen course. The language requirements for each course are found on the relevant course information page on Course Finder – look for the ‘International students’ tab under the ‘Admission, Key dates, and Fees’ heading.
English can be met through:

  • Standard English Tests
  • Alternative English Tests (during COVID-19 disruptions only)
  • Previous Study in English
  • Citizenship of Specific countries

If you do not meet these requirements, you can use English Study Pathways prior to commencing your UOW degree.

The Bachelor of Nursing has specific requirements which are outlined under the ‘Bachelor of Nursing English Language Requirements’ heading below.

Students applying for a study abroad, exchange or a visiting research practicum program should check under the application criteria for these programs.

You should also understand the English Language requirements for your student visa.

UOW accepts results for major international tests, including IELTS, TOEFL, Pearsons, Cambridge and OET (for some health-related courses). If you are using Pearsons, Cambridge, or OET tests, use the equivalence to IELTS tables below to determine the required score.

Due to the current impacts of COVID-19 on in-person testing centres, UOW is accepting standard English tests up to three years old for entry into Autumn 2021 and Trimester 1 2021.

  • If students who have been accepted on the basis of a Duolingo score appear to be incorrectly placed at a level in their course, UOW will reserve the right to require them to undertake English language study.

If you do not already meet the English requirements for your chosen course, you can complete an English course at UOW College Australia. UOW also recognises English language courses offered by some other colleges in Sydney - contact UOW Future Students for details.

A guide to the length of English course you may need to study is provided below. Please note that this table should only be considered a guide. Lower scores in Writing may mean that you'll need to study English for longer.
