Not sure what to study after high school? Feeling anxious and unsure?
Which UOW South Western Sydney course is for you?
Trust us, you’re not alone. In fact, we did a study that found about 15% of Year 12 students have basically no idea what they want to study, and a whopping 57% have some idea, but not really.
So, to answer the question on the lips of most Year 12 students, here are four cheats to help you figure what to do if you don’t know what to do.
We know, we know, you’ve been asked this a million times. But here’s a crazy thought: you might have never heard of the career you’ll end up doing! Weird, right?
It’s worth looking more closely at the areas of study that interest you now to see what kinds of careers these could lead to. For instance, if you are interested in maths, then perhaps the Bachelor of Applied Analytics course is for you. This path could lead you to become an accountant, a meteorologist, a business forecaster, a statistician or any other number of things. If you follow your interests, chances are you’ll find a dream career that you didn’t even know existed.
Plus, some fun facts: University of Wollongong (UOW) grads experience a higher chance of securing full-time employment than the average Australian uni student, while also topping the state for employer satisfaction, meaning you’ll be graduating with the skills, knowledge and experience employers are looking for.
2. Turn to your motivators for help
A motivator is the thing that makes you feel passionate. Some people call it their ‘purpose’, others call it their ‘why’. For you, maybe it’s caring for people, tech innovation, or even justice for all. Whatever it is, it’s worth investigating.
Here’s how this works: click on the motivator that speaks to you below, we’ll then reveal the relevant courses available to you at the University of Wollongong South Western Sydney campus. Navigating choices like this helps you think about your next step in a broader context.
Where could you end up? Find out below! One of these could be the answer to all your questions.

3. Do a personality test.
Something similar to this free online personality test was created during World War II by a mother and daughter duo (Myers Briggs), and has remained a popular tool among students and employers since. The idea was to help post-war women–entering the industrial workforce for the first time–find employment that suited their personality. So, it might work similarly for you when trying to choose your degree.
Once you finish the test, your results reveal potential career/study paths for your personality type (as well as some relationship hot tips and A-list celebs with similar traits)! Although considered pseudoscientific in some circles, it could help make things that little bit clearer.
4. Read all the things
Yes, not the most fun, but probably the best thing you can do to find the course that’s right for you, is choose a few options and carefully read through all the course information to help make your decision. On the UOW South Western Sydney web page, you’ll find a list of the all courses on offer at our Liverpool campus. These then take you through to the info for each, including a course summary, duration, fees, the required ATAR, possible career outcomes, as well as current student testimonials.
So, in all, think about what drives you and look into all your options. Taking these steps will pave a path that makes sense for you right now. It’s also important to note that nothing is ever locked in. If you change your mind later or discover a new path, it’s okay to transfer between courses. You may even be able to get credit for subjects you’ve already completed and count them towards the course you transfer into.
With eight study areas and 25 undergraduate courses available at UOW South Western Sydney – including double degrees – you’re bound to find the perfect course for you, right here in Liverpool.
We hope this has been helpful!
