Primary ethics teacher

Please note: this volunteering is with an external community organisation that UOWx has a partnership with. Please contact uowx@uow.edu.au once you have been accepted into this role and UOWx will add you to the Moodle site so you can commence claiming your hours.

What will I do?

Ethics teachers facilitate a weekly ethics class in which students learn to tackle ethical problems through discussion and reasoned argument.

Topics, questions, and supporting materials are supplied, teachers just need a computer to download them and access to a printer. Lessons are around half an hour per week during school term, plus an equivalent amount of preparation. You’ll be helping children develop the skills to think logically, disagree respectfully and use evidence to make decisions rather than act out of habit or peer pressure. Teach ethics and you’ll be helping children develop important skills for life.

How will I benefit?

Becoming a volunteer ethics teacher is a life-changing experience. You’ll be rewarded with a unique learning and development opportunity. All teachers receive online training and attend a two day face-to-face workshop covering facilitation skills, philosophical framework overview, child protection and behaviour management strategies. You’ll also have the opportunity to improve your organisational skills, interpersonal skills and intercultural awareness while contributing to your students’, and your own, knowledge of ethics. Plus, you’ll be working alongside other volunteers and making valuable connections in your community.

How do I apply?

Submit an online application and upload a short CV. You’ll be contacted to arrange an interview.

Are there any special requirements for this role?

If you have a genuine rapport with children and a keen interest in learning, and are available to run a class at a set time each week, then ethics teaching may be the volunteer opportunity for you. A one year minimum commitment is required.
