Submit an abstract

Abstract Submission

We are delighted to invite you to submit an abstract for review for both oral papers and poster presentations at ABC9.

How to submit an abstract?

Detailed information about the abstract submission process, including the template you must use to format your abstract are provided in the attached SUBMISSION GUIDELINES FOR THE 9th AUSTRALASIAN BIOMECHANICS CONFERENCE (ABC9). Please follow these instructions closely as the Organising Committee reserves the right to reject abstracts that do not adhere to the formatting requirements.

Abstract deadline extended: All abstracts must be emailed to abc9-brl@uow.edu.au by 5 May 2014.

How many abstracts can be submitted?

Because ABC9 is held over two full days, authors are restricted to submitting only one (1) abstract for an oral presentation where they are the first and/or presenting author. There is no restriction, however, on the number of abstracts that can be submitted for poster presentations. Students are also encouraged to submit work in progress, which will provide an opportunity to obtain value feedback from conference delegates. Authors must state that a study is a work in progress in the abstract title.

The abstract review process

All abstracts will initially be reviewed by the Organising Committee to ensure that the topic is appropriate, the abstract adheres to the required format, submission guidelines have been followed and correct grammar has been used. All papers must be related to Biomechanics. Papers will then be reviewed by at least two members of the Scientific Committee. Reviewers will be assessing its suitability for presentation at the conference and for publication in the proceedings. On the basis of the review, your paper will be categorised as one of the following:

  • Reject: Not suitable for presentation at ABC9.
  • Conditional Acceptance: The abstract will only be accepted if the authors can make satisfactory responses to the reviewers' concerns. The abstract will then be accepted only if all the concerns are addressed to the satisfaction of the reviewers.
  • Accept with minor or no changes: The abstract will be accepted if the authors can make minor (or no) changes to the satisfaction of the Organising Committee.

Authors can expect an email from the Organising Committee outlining the initial review decision by the 2 June 2014. Revisions will be due on 1 July 2014.

If you experience any problems when uploading your abstract please email abc9-brl@uow.edu.au.

Copyright information

By submitting an abstract, all authors confirm that: (i) they own the copyright and have not used copyrighted material without permission, and (ii) the abstract has not been previously published or submitted elsewhere. By submitting the abstract, the authors transfer their copyright to the ABC9 Organising Committee pending acceptance of the abstract for presentation at the conference. In return, the ABC9 Organising Committee grants permission to the authors and to ANZSB to publish the abstract in online repositories, provided that the abstract, and any reference to it, clearly identifies the Congress where the abstract was presented. Authors have permission to submit the work for journal publication.

What topics can be submitted?

Authors are encouraged to submit abstracts on any topic that is related to the scientific study and application of biomechanics, in its broadest sense. Presentations are invited in areas such as animal biomechanics, biomechanical modeling and simulation, bone and hard tissue biomechanics, breast health biomechanics, cardiovascular and respiratory biomechanics, cellular and molecular biomechanics, connective tissue biomechanics, footwear biomechanics, gait biomechanics, instrumentation and evaluation methods in biomechanics, motor control, musculoskeletal biomechanics, orthopaedic biomechanics rehabilitation biomechanics, sport biomechanics, strength and conditioning, textile biomechanics, and any other relevant topic.

What will be the format of oral presentations?

Oral presentations will be 8 minutes in length with up to 2 minutes of question time. Presenters will be asked to upload their presentations (PowerPoint) onto the conference laptops well before their scheduled presentation in the Speaker Ready Room. Presenters will not be permitted to use their own laptops, with the exception of the keynote speakers.

A selection of student work in progress presentations will be chosen to participate in a cluster of 5 minute oral presentations, followed by detailed discussion of the projects, lead by senior biomechanists.

What will be the format of poster presentations?

Posters will be presented on Monday night, in the relaxed atmosphere of the conference dinner venue. Presenters will stand with their posters during the poster presentation time and be available to discuss their research findings with interested delegates. Posters should be printed out in A0 size, in portrait format (width of 841 mm x height of 1189 mm). The conference organisers will supply materials to attach posters to the poster boards.
