The Student Academic Progress Group
The University of Wollongong is committed to providing appropriate learning and other support should students be identified as at risk of not achieving satisfactory course progress. All students entering the medical program in the Graduate School of Medicine are high achieving students with an excellent academic record. Despite this, some students struggle with their studies. The problems that create difficulties for students arise from personal, family and psychological issues as well as specific academic problems.
This Group provides a more formal and focussed process to support students and to ensure that support structures work effectively across the Phases. The major purpose is to provide a means of co-ordination and to foster cooperation among those charged with the academic progress of MD students. The Group will review regularly and comprehensively the academic progress of students and the arrangements for meeting existing and future needs (information will be collated using SPRs, CEX-S, clinical competencies, exam results, PPD judgements, RCA assignments, anatomy results and other assessment tasks). It is the intention that this approach will lead to positive outcomes with a range of actions being sought to provide benefits for the identified students.
It will also provide a means of co-ordination and foster cooperation among the welfare services at the University as well as advising the GSM committee and Director: Learning & Teaching of matters pertaining to academic progress and other issues relevant to the Group’s business.
The Student Academic Progress Group comprises the Head of Students for the GSM, the Phase chairs and the Director Learning and Teaching.
