NHMRC Funding

National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC)

NHMRC funding supports research across the full spectrum of health and medical research, from basic science through to clinical, public health and health services research.

All NHMRC grant submissions must go via UOW’s Research Services Office (RSO).

Sapphire is the new web-based grants management system used for submission (RGMS has now approached the end of its useful life). If you have an existing RGMS account you can activate your own Sapphire account. If you do not have an RGMS Profile you will need to register for an account. See the Sapphire landing page for information on account access.

NHMRC funding opportunities can be viewed by date on the NHMRC Funding Calendar, or grants and all related documents can be viewed via GrantConnect, the Australian Government’s central grants information portal which provides access to opportunities and documentation on Commonwealth grant schemes.

Grants program

The NHMRC introduced a new grants program, with the first round of funding commencing from 2020. Further information can be found on the NHMRC Website, and RSO presentations on the following new schemes can be found on the RSO intranet:

- Investigator grants
- Ideas grants
- Synergy Grants

Grants held under NHMRC's previous and new grant schemes may impact on eligibility under the new grant program. Any questions should be directed to the RSO via rao-uow@uow.edu.au

Strategic and leveraging grants stream

This stream includes schemes that address strategic and national priorities and support leveraged funding. This includes: targeted calls for research, clinical trials and cohort studies, international collaborative grants, and other strategic initiatives. Strategic and leveraging grants do not affect eligibility for grants under the new grants program.

NHMRC funding opportunities

The new grants program

The new grants program is comprised of the following funding streams:

  • Investigator Grants- provides researchers at all career stages (early career, mid-career and established researchers
  • Ideas Grants- provides funding for up to 5 years for innovative research, in any area of health and medical research
  • Synergy Grants- supports outstanding multidisciplinary teams (4-10 CIs) to work together to answer major research questions

Strategic and leveraging grants stream

This stream includes schemes that address strategic and national priorities and support leveraged funding. This includes: targeted calls for research, international collaborative grants, other strategic initiatives. This strategic and leveraging grants stream includes the following funding opportunities:

  • Clinical Trials and Cohort Studies Grants- support high-quality clinical trials and cohort studies that address important gaps in knowledge
  • Centres of Research Excellence (CRE)- provides support for teams of researchers to pursue collaborations in clinical, population health and health services research
  • Development Grants- provides support for researchers to undertake health and medical research at the proof-of-concept stage, driving towards a commercial outcome
  • Partnerships for Better Health- supports more effective connections between policy decision makers and researchers
  • Postgraduate Scholarships- aims to support graduates early in their career to conduct research that is internationally competitive

Investigator Grants provide researchers at all career stages (early career, mid-career and established researchers), with salary funding (if eligible) and a research support package. Investigator Grants are offered over 5 years and under 2 categories: "Emerging Leadership Fellows" (≤10 years post-PhD) and "Leadership Fellows".

Visit the Intranet Investigator Grants page for more information

Ideas Grants will provide funding for up to 5 years for creative research, in any area of health and medical research, from discovery to implementation. Investigators at all career stages, including early and mid-career are eligible to apply.

Visit the Intranet Ideas Grants page for more information.

Synergy Grants support outstanding multidisciplinary teams (4-10 CIs) to work together to answer major research questions that cannot be answered by a single CI. These grants will provide fixed funding of $5 million over 5 years.

Visit the Intranet Synergy Grants page for more information

Clinical Trials and Cohort Studies Grants aim to support high-quality clinical trials and cohort studies that address important gaps in knowledge, leading to relevant and implementable findings for the benefit of human health.

Visit the Intranet NHMRC Grants page for more information.

Is my project a clinical trial or cohort study

The CRE scheme provides support for teams of researchers to pursue collaborations in clinical, population health and health services research*. The research should aim to improve translation of research outcomes into policy and/or practice. Funding up to $3 million over 5 years is available.

Visit the Intranet NHMRC Grants page for more information.

The Development Grants scheme provides support for researchers to undertake health and medical research at the proof-of-concept stage, and which drives towards a commercial outcome via a commercial business plan.

Visit the Intranet NHMRC Grants page for more information.

Partnership Projects create partnerships among decision makers, policy makers, managers, clinicians and researchers. Partnership Projects answer a specific research question to influence health and well-being through changes in the delivery, organisation, funding and access to health services.

This scheme provides 3 years of funding for a research based postgraduate degree. It aims to support graduates early in their career to conduct research that is internationally competitive.
