Overview

The Honours program is a reward and recognition program for high achieving students who have demonstrated excellence in the first three years of the Bachelor of Primary Education (371) or the Bachelor of Primary Education (Dean's Scholar) (1897).

Course Learning Outcomes

Course Learning Outcomes are statements of learning achievement that are expressed in terms of what the learner is expected to know, understand and be able to do upon completion of a course. Students graduating from this course will be able to:

2 Apply skills in regards to leadership, problem solving, technology and planning for all learners; differentiation of pedagogical strategies and reflection on practice;
3 Demonstrate skills of an active professional who is articulate in regards to the theory-practice nexus its role and theirs as the teacher as researcher;
4 Demonstrate and apply higher order thinking in relation to current and future educational challenges;
5 Demonstrate the ability to manipulate academic literature and mandatory documents that relate to research, pedagogy and policy;
6 Demonstrate an understanding of the available research methodologies and their manipulation to design and implement a research project;
7 Demonstrate and apply ethical and responsible behaviour;
8 Demonstrate the successful completion of a sustained independent research project utilising the skills of analysis, synthesis and knowledge that will identify the research findings pertaining to an educational issue; and
9 Demonstrate the ability to coherently communicate to a variety of audiences the research findings.

Course Structure

The Honours program is the fourth year of study in the Bachelor of Primary Education or Bachelor of Primary Education (Dean’s Scholar). Honours students complete a 12 credit point thesis (EDPT412) plus additional coursework as listed below.

The Bachelor of Primary Education (Honours) requires:

  1. The successful completion of 192 credit points as specified in the table below, including the Professional Experience components embedded in the course.
  2. Students must successfully complete 36 credit points from the Year 1 subjects to be eligible for the first Professional Experience and to enrol in Year 2 subjects. Students should also note that a number of subject pre-requisites will be in place throughout the course.
  3. Students must have passed all core subjects in their degree and be enrolled in any annual and final semester core subjects to be eligible for their final Professional Experience.
  4. The Honours grade will be calculated using Method 2. For further information refer to the General Course Rules.

Compulsory Work Placement / Online Components

This course contains a total of 595 hours or approximately 85 days of compulsory work-based placements, completed over 25 weeks throughout the degree. This course may also contain compulsory components to be completed online.

Professional Recognition/Accreditation

This degree is accredited and nationally recognised as a professional teaching qualification. Students seeking work outside NSW or Australia are advised to check with potential employers and other teacher registration authorities for any additional requirements.

All students completing a NSW teacher education course will need to pass an approved literacy and numeracy test.
