Bachelor of Communication and Media - Bachelor of International Studies | 2018

Overview

International Studies is the analysis, appreciation and study of the diversity of the global community. It examines the relationships of politics, society, culture, language, and history in a range of countries. A degree in Communication and Media will prepare you for success in the worlds of journalism, advertising, public relations, corporate branding and international media.

The two degrees are complementary with their focus on internationalisation and globalisation from different perspectives. It suits those seeking future careers in media, or related fields, in an international context and will prepare you for the world of digital communications and social media.

A double degree in Bachelor of Communication and Media - Bachelor of International Studies addresses relevant global, economic and political issues affecting the media and communications industries. It will teach you a diverse skill set and equip you with a theoretical background in global media, proficiency in a language and the ability to analyse real-life case studies.

Course Learning Outcomes

A number of the course learning outcomes in each of these degrees complement and consolidate outcomes in the partner degree. Applied across two discipline areas, the outcomes are achieved at a broader and more comprehensive level.

Course Structure

To qualify for award of the degree, the Bachelor of Communication and Media - Bachelor of International Studies, a candidate must successfully complete at least 216 credit points, comprised of:

1. The core subjects for the Bachelor of International Studies (24 credit points);
2. A minimum of a minor in a language other than English (or students may elect to take a major in a language) (a minimum of 24 credit points);
3. At least one of the majors listed for the Bachelor of International Studies (48 credit points);
4. The core subjects for the Bachelor of Communication and Media (48 credit points);
5. At least one of the majors from the Bachelor of Communication and Media (48 credit points);
6. Electives to bring the total number of credit points completed to 216;
7. Not more than 90 credit points in 100-level subjects. 

Note: Students must achieve a clear pass in the core 300 level subjects. 

Majors

Students completing this degree will complete at least two majors. One chosen from the Bachelor of Communication and Media, and one from the Bachelor of International Studies. Follow the links to each Course Handbook page for information on majors available in each degree.  

Minors

Minors available for each degree are outlined on the course handbook pages:

As part of the Bachelor of International Studies, students will complete at least one minor in a language other than English.

Students may also be eligible for other minors as part of their degree program provided they meet the requirements set. Minor studies consist of a minimum of 24 credit points, of which at least 12 credit points are completed at 200 level or higher.

Minors appear on the transcript (academic record), but do not appear on the testamur. To have a minor study recorded, students must submit an Application to Declare or Change Intended Major/Minor.

Work Integrated Learning

Undertaking a work integrated learning (WIL) experience during your university education is now a significant contributor to being competitive in securing employment in your field of choice when you graduate from UOW.

The Faculty of Law, Humanities and the Arts internship program provides students with an opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills acquired in their degree in a workplace setting.

Students' are also encouraged to consider CRLP200 (6cp). CRLP200 includes a quality assured workplace internship or industry project to give you that competitive edge by developing your professional skills through authentic learning in a real world context. You will focus on your career goals and receive career direction guidance, strengthen your resume and gain skills to navigate the rapidly changing world of work, develop your communication skills and begin to build a professional network.

Honours

Students can do an Honours degree in either the Bachelor of Communication and Media Studies or the Bachelor of International Studies. This requires additional study (one year full-time, or two years part-time).

Honours may be undertaken by students who meet the requirements for enrolment.
