Overview

Graduate Certificate in Indigenous Trauma and Recovery Practice will respond to issues that have particular relevance in Indigenous communities in Australia and globally. It will provide specific skills and competencies so that graduates can work from a trauma informed care and practice approach. It is a multi-disciplinary program that aims to increase skills including being able to apply critical thinking, collaborative practices and judgement when working individually and within communities across service provision with children, families and communities experiencing trauma. Most importantly the course will focus on applying Global Mental Health principles and practices in work on mental health; suicide and self-harm; family and community violence; alcohol and other substance misuse and child safety issues from a trauma informed care and practice approach to wellbeing.

Course Learning Outcomes

Course Learning Outcomes are statements of learning achievement that are expressed in terms of what the learner is expected to know, understand and be able to do upon completion of a course. Students graduating from this course will be able to demonstrate:

1 Discuss and appreciate coherent and advanced knowledge of Trauma in an Aboriginal and/or Indigenous community context.
2 Integrate knowledge and competency in working with children at risk, intergenerational and neuro-developmental changes in complex trauma environments.
3 Apply critical thinking, collaborative practice and judgement when working individually and with service providers with children, families and communities in trauma.
4 Collaborate with and assist in the development of the infrastructure and practical application of therapeutic communities.
5 Describe the theories and demonstrate understanding of the practice of Indigenous healing therapies.
6 Communicate and apply knowledge of an Educare model when working with children and their families, in cultural environments for restorative justice, and justice reinvestment
7 Discuss and develop an outline for process and outcomes evaluative research within your workplace practice for the development of practice based evidence.
8 Apply Global Mental Health principles and practice to advocate for human rights and social justice.
