Overview

The Master of Work Health and Safety Advanced provides an intensive specialised professional program of study in the area of occupational health & safety, requiring the completion of two specialisations.  Students must complete one specialisation from:

  • Ergonomics
  • Occupational Hygiene
  • Risk Management

And a second specialisation from:

  • Health Promotion or
  • WHS Research.

Knowledge and skills developed through the degree will be applied to research-based capstone workplace projects related to each specialisation, in the final stage of the program.  The capstones develop a high level of evidence-based specialised professional practice in occupational health and safety.

Course Learning Outcomes

Course Learning Outcomes are statements of learning achievement that are expressed in terms of what the learner is expected to know, understand and be able to do upon completion of a course. Students graduating from this course will be able to demonstrate:

Course Structure

The Master of Work Health and Safety Advanced requires the successful completion of at least 96 credit points including:

  1. 48 credit points from core subjects;
  2. A 24 credit point specialisation in either Ergonomics, Occupational Hygiene or Risk Management; and
  3. An additional 24 credit point specialisation in either Health Promotion or WHS Research

as specified below.

Students who commence in Spring session must complete the Health Promotion specialisation prior to commencing the core Work Health and Safety subjects.

SPECIALISATIONS

Specialisations are normally commenced after the core requirements are completed.  Students commencing in Spring session will complete the requirements for the Health Promotion specialisation first, before completing core requirements and a second specialisation in subsequent sessions.  Students wishing to undertake the WHS Research specialisation will normally have completed the core and first specialisation requirements prior to the major project.

 WHS RESEARCH SPECIALISATION

 Admission to the WHS Research specialisation requires students to achieve 65% average in the core subjects and permission of the Director of Academic Programs.  It may only be taken in combination with the specialisations in Ergonomics, Occupational Hygiene or Risk Management.

Professional Recognition/Accreditation

The Master of Work Health and Safety Advanced has been accredited by the Australian Occupational Health & Safety Education Accreditation Board (AOHSEAB). The Occupational Hygiene specialisation has been accredited by the British Occupational Hygiene Society (BOHS).

Accreditation is being sought from the Institution of Occupational Safety & Health (IOSH) and the Australian Institute of Occupational Hygienists (AIOH).
