Overview
The Master of International Studies Advanced is an interdisciplinary coursework degree grounded in critical social and political theory but with content inspired by current global challenges and professional concerns. It reflects the growing realisation that understanding and addressing complex global challenges requires an approach that goes beyond traditional academic disciplinary boundaries. The course seeks to explain debate, critically analyse and apply key concepts and ideas in international studies to give its graduates a strong understanding of the dynamics of internationalisation, globalisation, development and social change.
In this advanced two year full time (or equivalent part-time) degree students will benefits from a combination of knowledge from a range of higher level coursework subjects, training in research methods and completion of an individual research project or thesis. This will give MIS Advanced graduates key skills to start a career in the public sector, in internationally-focused private sectors organisation, non-governmental organisations and, of course, in international organisations. It is also designed for people wanting extra skills to enable them to take the next step in their career or change careers.

Course Learning Outcomes
Students graduating from the Master of International Studies Advanced will be able to:
- Evaluate and communicate the main debates in international studies and related fields;
- Analyse social and cultural change in international and regional contexts demonstrating a critical understanding of contemporary globalisation and development issues;
- Apply key theories of international studies to contemporary interactions in the corporate, government and non-profit sector;
- Independently plan and execute a substantial research-based project or price of scholarship that demonstrates advanced understanding and critical analysis of the area of study.
Course Structure
To qualify for award of the degree of Master of International Studies Advanced course code 456, a student must complete a total of at least 96 credit points including 18 credit points of core subjects plus either MIST993, MIST994 or MIST995 and 60 - 72 credit points of electives from schedules 1 and 2 below.
NOTES:
- students can only elect a maximum of five (5) subjects from Schedule 2
- * International students cannot complete more than one subject marked with an asterisk per semester as these subjects are offered online.
