Overview
Health services in Australia, as in most countries, are experiencing a surge of interest and investment in e-health. The Master of Health Informatics is designed for both IT professionals as well as applicants with a health qualification. This degree produces graduates who are ICT professionals, especially for those entering with a health qualification, and to provide those with an IT background with specific knowledge of health informatics.
Graduates will be equipped to:
- develop national and state-wide strategies for departments of health;
- manage major health informatics projects within and between organisations;
- provide leadership in health informatics in public and private hospitals, with health system vendors, telecommunications providers and pharmaceutical companies.

Course Learning Outcomes
Students graduating from the Master of Health Informatics will be able to:
- Evaluate health data management and technologies to improve the quality, efficiency, equity and safety of healthcare.
- Interpret and apply policies and technologies to protect data integrity and validity, including information privacy and security policies and procedures.
- Apply statistical and research methodologies to implement evidence-based healthcare management through information systems.
- Communicate knowledge of health information systems and technology to healthcare organisations and stakeholders.
- Evaluate, implement and use information systems’ tools, techniques, and methodologies applicable to the healthcare environment.
- Apply, adapt and validate informatics concepts and approaches as they relate to specific biomedical and healthcare problems.
- Work as an individual and as a member of a team in a manner consistent with ethical and professional standards.
Course Structure
Candidates must successfully complete:
- Four core subjects (24 cp);
- depending on previous qualifications students will complete either Information Technology (24 credit points) or Health (18 credit points) specialisation;
- ISIT990 Professional Practice & Research Project (12cp);
- at least 12 cp from the Advanced Information Technology Subjects; and
- Information Technology Subjects sufficient units to complete degree credit points or additional subjects from Advanced Information Technology Subject list.
