Bachelor of Public Health Honours

Course Description

The Bachelor of Public Health is an ideal first degree for those interested in a career that enhances the health of the community. Students are given the opportunity to understand key issues affecting the health of populations; develop skills in obtaining, reviewing and analysing health information; planning and managing a health program or project; and improving the health of the population.

Course Structure

The Bachelor of Public Health requires the successful completion of 144 credit points of subjects in accordance with the course structure and recommended subject progression table below under each major. Elective subjects can be any University of Wollongong subject on the General Schedule, or from the recommended subjects listed.

Students may undertake no more than 60 credit points of 100-level subjects to qualify for the award.

Minors

• Introduction to Public Health

Non-public health undergraduate students can complete a minor study in Introduction to Public Health. A minor in Introduction to Public Health will consist of at least 26 credit points in subjects with the prefix 'SHS' from the course structure of the Bachelor of Public Health degree, and must include SHS130, SHS230, SHS231 and either SHS330 or SHS331. Subjects in the minor may not be cross counted towards any other minor or major study.

The structure and recommended subject sequence in most of the Bachelor of Public Health and Bachelor of Public Health Honours majors provides sufficient flexibility for a public health student to take a minor study in another area subject to place availability in the minor study subjects.

• Psychology (See Bachelor of Psychology)

Faculties across the university offer minor studies and may accept students from outside their faculty. Please note you cannot complete more than 60 credit points of Level 100 subjects in your degree.

Honours

High achieving students will be eligible to apply for entry into the Bachelor of Public Health Honours which is designed as an additional fourth year of study to provide students with skills to demonstrate excellence in research with a clear understanding of the research question. Entry into the Bachelor of Public Health Honours requires the student to have attained at least a credit average in subjects undertaken during their undergraduate degree. The Honours Coordinator together with the prospective supervisor will determine whether a student's 300-level subjects are appropriate for entry into the Honours program. In addition, admission to the Bachelor of Public Health Honours will be dependent upon the availability of an appropriate supervisor, who must be identified by the applicant, agree to supervise and have this role endorsed by the Head of school before the student applies for entry. Students who are interested in honours study should alert the Course Coordinator as soon as possible, and liaise with the School Honours Coordinator regarding potential supervisors, topics and honours information sessions.

The Honours grade will be calculated in accordance with University of Wollongong Method 1. For further information refer to General Course Rules Section 8.
