The Bachelor of Mathematics Education (Dean's Scholar) program is for high achieving students who wish to continue their studies through the completion of honours and research degrees. The degree creates secondary teachers who understanding best practice teaching methods in addition to holding a full mathematics major. It can also lead to other careers that require high-level training skills in the many business environments mathematics graduates find work.   

Students enrolled in the Dean's Scholar degrees will fulfil the same requirements for their respective courses but will be allocated an academic mentor and engage in enriched assessment tasks in specified subjects.

  • $500 textbook allowance per year (pro rata for part-time)
  • Opportunities to attend Faculty workshops and seminars
  • End of year lunch and other relevant activities with the Dean and mentors.


Students are expected to maintain a weighted average mark of 80 to continue their enrolment in the course.

*Entry to the Dean's Scholar degree is competitive. Candidates are required to submit an application form and also attend an interview held in December.

Entry Requirements

Selection is based on ATAR and a successful Dean's Scholar application. Applicants must also satisfy the entry requirements for the Bachelor of Mathematics Education.

Academic requirements, English requirements and credit transfer information are available from the Course Finder. The Dean's Scholars Application can be obtained from the School of Education.

Students currently enrolled in a degree at UOW may apply to transfer to the Dean's Scholar program provided they have completed 48 credit points of study at 100 level and have achieved a WAM of 85%
 

Course Structure

Dean's Scholars must fulfil the same course requirements as listed for the Bachelor of Mathematics Education.

Professional Accreditation / Recognition

This degree is accredited with the NSW Institute of Teachers and is recognised as a professional teaching qualification in other jurisdictions nationally and internationally. Students seeking work outside NSW are advised to check with potential employers .
