Moving with family

If your move to Wollongong for study also means a move with family, here are a few tips that will help everyone settle in.

Schools

Wollongong is home to many excellent public schools. Use the NSW Department of Education School Finder tool to find a school near you.

Childcare services

Childcare facilities are available for children aged six weeks to six years. For more information, please visit the Kids’ Uni website.

To apply to the waitlist, please submit this form. Please not that waiting lists can be long (for example 12 months or more), and places are limited, so it is important that you plan well in advance, particularly if your child is under two years old.

You are strongly encouraged to apply to the waitlist of multiple facilities and not just the Kids’ Uni, as this will increase the odds of securing a spot. Visit the Service NSW website to search for a local childcare service.

Making friends

Playgroups are a great way to interact with other families, and help your child make new friends. They offer support and learning for parents and children. Visit the Playgroup NSW website to find a playgroup nearby.

School holiday activities are listed on the Wollongong City Council website. You can also find activities for the whole family to get involved in by checking out What's On in Wollongong.

Families moving from overseas may also enjoy the English conversation classes for students and their partners held by the Illawarra Committee for International Students.

Partners finding work

As the third largest city in NSW, Wollongong has many employment opportunities in a range of fields, including retail and hospitality, health care and education.

Visit our Jobs at UOW page for opportunities at the University, or check out one of the major employment websites - Indeed or Seek.

Family-friendly accommodation

UOW offers accommodation specially designed for families and mature age students - Bangalay. Located right across the road from campus, and offering two and three bedroom family units, Bangalay is a great choice for students moving to UOW with a family.

Those considering a private rental but not familiar with the Australian rental market are welcome to see assistance from UOW Accommodation Services.
