Australia awards scholarship

Australia Awards Scholarships are long-term awards administered by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

They aim to contribute to the development needs of Australia's partner countries in line with bilateral and regional agreements.

They provide opportunities for people from developing countries, particularly those countries located in the Indo-Pacific region, to undertake full time undergraduate or postgraduate study at participating Australian universities and Technical and Further Education (TAFE) institutions.

Planning your arrival

Temporary accommodation

Singles: Our team will arrange 7 days of temporary accommodation for you when you arrive in Australia. Any costs for this accommodation will need to be paid from your establishment cheque when you arrive.

Family: If you are coming with your family we encourage you to arrange more permanent accommodation before arriving in Australia.

Permanent accommodation

You are responsible to locate permanent accommodation. UOW accommodation services in Student Central (building 17) can assist with locating permanent accommodation.

Living expenses include food, rental, entertainment and transportation. Go to the cost of living website for details on average costs.

Please note that your actual expenses may vary according to your individual life style.

The University offers a free airport transfer service to commencing Australia Awards scholars from Sydney international airport to the University of Wollongong and surrounding areas.

You will receive an email from UOW confirming your arrival details as well as information about where you will be picked up.

In the event you are not met at the airport, please contact the UOW Australia Awards Officer on (02) 4252 8959 or Leisure Coast Limousines directly on (02) 4261 7393

Please note: costs for family transport are not supported by your scholarship.

We recommend you arrive two weeks before the Introductory Academic Program (IAP) to allow time for settling in and completing your enrolment.

Australia Awards and the University of Wollongong recommend to students who would like to bring their families to wait until they have done the following:

  • Secured permanent accommodation
  • Completed the Introductory to Academic Studies program
  • Completed necessary childcare/school arrangements
  • Arranged family overseas student health cover
  • Commenced degree program

The decision to bring family to Australia is a personal decision and neither Australia Awards nor the University of Wollongong has the right to prevent a student from bringing their families to Australia.

Issues to consider:

  • Do you have sufficient funds to pay for airfares, OSHC, accommodation, food, clothing etc for your family?
  • Will your family be able to adjust to life in Australia?
  • If your family does not speak English, what problems may they face?
  • Will your children struggle to adjust to the education in Australia/ or when returning to your home country?
  • Will your spouse be able to gain employment in Australia?
  • Will your spouse's career in your home country be disrupted?

Please note that Australia Awards and the University of Wollongong will not cover any expenses relating to your family dependants.

Australia Awards scholars are required to make their way to the University of Wollongong, Student Central building 17 (see Campus map) the next working day after their arrival to Australia. The UOW Australia Awards Officer will meet with scholars and will provide information on the following areas:

  • Opening a bank account and accessing your establishment allowance
  • Setting up your stipend
  • Enrolling in the IAP and your main course
  • Obtaining a student ID card

You will also receive an arrival kit, which provides important information on other areas such as public transport and OSHC.
