Online orientation and remote learning information

We understand that the subjects you have enrolled in will now be experienced differently to the way you had anticipated they would be when you enrolled. The Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences has put together some information to help you navigate through the new processes.

Remote Delivery FAQ

Please be advised that key dates have changed

The University’s annual academic calendar and session dates for 2020 will be reassessed and altered as the COVID-19 outbreak develops. The University will make adjustments to the calendar while also ensuring students have the opportunity to complete the necessary workloads to complete their degree.

Need help or more information?

Please contact Student Services via

First Year Moodle Site

Please note that students are automatically enrolled in this course if you don't have access, please contact Robyn Hughes (rhughes@uow.edu.au).

Subject coordinators will communicate changes to their subjects through the subject Moodle site. If you have any questions about these changes, please contact your subject coordinator by email.

To protect our staff, students and community from the spread of COVID-19, UOW have decided there will be no-in person, invigilated exams held in Autumn session that would normally be scheduled in exam halls/facilities on UOW’s Australian based campuses.

  • Whilst FACE to FACE exams will be cancelled, EIS may organise timed synchronous exams for some subjects. Other subjects may have a large final assignment in the exam weeks.
  • Alternative assessments will be determined on a subject by subject basis. We are working, as much as possible, to avoid clashes during the exam period.
  • The specifics and schedule for these alternative assessments are being worked through as quickly as possible.
  • UOW is currently liaising with the relevant accrediting bodies to determine solutions, where specific examinations and assessments form part of their requirements. Information will be communicated to students by their Subject Coordinators in the coming weeks.

The last few months have been very challenging as we continue with remote delivery for most of our courses. At UOW, we will aim to ensure a high-quality, remotely-delivered learning experience for students, with support in place for students and teaching staff.

We have compiled the following tips for working remotely

Learning spaces

  • Set up a dedicated learning space (if you have the room)
  • Make sure it is neat and free from distractions
  • Be respectful of others if you are sharing the space

Learning materials

  • Ensure your electronic device is charged and ready each day
  • Make sure you can access all online platforms such as Zoom, Webex
  • Have your textbooks and writing materials ready
  • Use headphones, especially if you are sharing a space with others

Time Management

  • Check your SOLS and UOW mail regularly. Read and reply.
  • Follow your timetable and make sure you are ready to learn at the appropriate time
  • Prioritise: Manage your time wisely
  • Ask questions when you don’t understand something
  • Collaborate with others to develop study notes

Online Behaviour

  • MUTE your camera and microphone in Zoom classes
  • Use the Raise Hand function to ask a question
  • Follow all instructions from your lecturers and tutors
  • Use the CHAT function only as advised by your lecturers or tutors
  • Be polite and respectful at all times

Dress appropriately

  • Make a point of changing out of your pyjamas each day
  • Dress neatly
  • Ensure your profile picture is blank or use an appropriate photo

Stay healthy

  • Maintain healthy sleep patterns
  • Stay hydrated
  • Stop for lunch breaks and make healthy choices
  • Take a break at the end of each lecture/workshop/tutorial
  • Get up from your desk and stretch
  • Get some exercise, go outdoors for a walk (remember to maintain social distancing)
  • Stay connected with your friends online
  • Take a break from social media by switching off your phone
  • Practice good mental health and wellbeing
  • Stay home (unless exercising), wash your hands

We appreciate the support and partnership of our students and academics while we are in remote-delivery mode. Face to face consultations are currently restricted, however, staff are available on email during work hours.

Remote Study Support for International Students

It can be hard studying alone. Not having other students to discuss ideas with can be difficult, especially if you don’t understand the content or if you are an international student studying in Australia far from home. UOW Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences are delivering extra support to international students to conduct their studies remotely. All sessions will be online via Zoom or Webex.

Find out more

All subjects have a subject coordinator who is responsible for that subject. If you need assistance, have questions or need consideration you can contact this person. All subject coordinators can be found via the EIS Academics Contacts page or in the Subject Outline.

All first-year students will be connected with a Student Mentor. Your mentor can help you with questions you might have, give you some study tips and tricks and be someone you can talk to during this period of social distancing. Your Student Mentor will connect with you in the upcoming weeks.

International Student Mentors

EIS has a dedicated team of International Student Mentors who are available to help you with your adjustment to study, be a support network and a friend. If you want to reach out to one of our mentors, please visit the EIS International Mentors page.
