Entry into a Higher Degree Research (HDR) course is determined by the evaluation of your application and your research project proposal by the academic staff in Higher Education Studies. Selected applicants may be required to take part in an interview with their proposed principal supervisor and/or Head of Postgraduate Students (via telephone or Skype if necessary). Following this interview, you may also be asked to provide additional supporting documentation or a revised research proposal.
For general information about the application process for postgraduate research at UOW, please consult the advice provided by Future Students.
To submit an application for an HDR degree, have all your documentation ready go to Apply to Study.
Important note: the School of Higher Education Studies (HES) has only recently been launched at UOW, and for the time being we will be closely affiliated with the School of Education in the Faculty of Social Sciences. Where the online application menus ask for school affiliations, please select the School of Education, but make sure that you also nominate Dr Ruth Walker as the relevant Head of Postgraduate Studies and identify your nominated HES supervisor(s). Your application will be processed accordingly.
While HES is willing to receive applications for postgraduate research study at any time of year, students may only commence their studies at the beginning of each session. The following dates indicate the HES schedule for submission of applications, although students are encouraged to submit earlier. In special cases where applications are supported by a supervisor, they may be submitted later, up until the HECS census date.

Please note that the postgraduate research application process is lengthy as each application is assessed by a number of different stakeholders at UOW. Turnaround times for a research application can take 6–8 weeks so it is recommended that students start the application process earlier than the closing date.
International students will have additional application requirements, fees and visa issues, so are advised to apply earlier than the above dates to ensure enough time for the relevant application processes. For more information about entry requirements, please go to Future Research Students
