Interim Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President

Professor Mark Hoffman is a dynamic and forward-thinking senior leader in the higher education sector, currently serving as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and Student Life) at the University of Wollongong. In this role, he oversees innovation and excellence in education and student experience across UOW’s domestic and international campuses. His portfolio includes curriculum and digital innovation, quality assurance, student support and welfare, library services, and global student recruitment, all aimed at fostering a seamless and enriching academic journey.
Previously, Professor Hoffman held senior leadership roles at the University of Newcastle and UNSW Sydney, including Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Dean of Engineering, and Pro-Vice Chancellor Research. At UNSW, he led Australia’s top-ranked engineering faculty, significantly expanded female representation in engineering, and helped establish global initiatives like TEDI and Design Next. His leadership has consistently focused on preparing students to be Life-Ready – equipped with the skills, resilience, and experience to thrive in a rapidly evolving world.
An accomplished materials scientist and engineer, Professor Hoffman specialises in the structural integrity of advanced materials. He has published over 250 peer-reviewed papers, secured more than A$11 million in research funding, and supervised over 30 higher degree research students. He is a Fellow of both the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering and Engineers Australia, and has served on numerous international research, academic and corporate boards.
