Professor Julia Coyle

Pro Vice-Chancellor (Students) (2018-present)

Professor Julia Coyle was appointed Pro Vice-Chancellor (Students) in 2017 bringing to the role 30 years practice, research and leadership experience in the Health and Higher Education sector. Her experience in strategic planning, leadership and management extends across the two sectors.

The newly created Pro Vice-Chancellor (Students) position at UOW plays a central role in maximising student success, and fostering student engagement, retention, satisfaction and exceptional student outcomes. Professor Coyle’s career, that has included experience as a Leader in Higher Education as Head of School and Dean of Students, and in Health as a Board Director of the only cross border health service in Australia (Albury-Wodonga Health), has enabled her to achieve significant outcomes and develop strong capabilities in student experience, student retention and in innovative inclusive practice. It is the combined experience from this work that has informed her capacity to effect institutional change in relation to practice with students.

Professor Coyle is a physiotherapist with a PhD in interprofessional practice. Her research interests encompass organisational change and collaborative practice, as well as preventative health care. Professor Coyle is a consultant to the Queensland Health Department on the Queensland Health Practitioners Research Scheme, a scheme designed to enhance research capability of health practitioners and extend the use of evidence based practice. Leading from this work and her reputation as a proponent of interprofessional practice she was invited in 2016 to serve on the Greater Northern Australia Regional Training Network Allied Health Rural Generalist Education Program Review Panel; establishing an innovative approach to addressing access to allied health services for regional communities across Northern Australia.

In this role as Pro Vice-Chancellor (Students), Professor Coyle is committed to the University of Wollongong maintaining a reputation for exceptional student experiences, and for creating social change by widening access, participation and success of equity group students.
