Cultural and Linguistic Diversity

A rich tapestry of community, culture and society

UOW proudly celebrates our rich cultural diversity and boasts our vibrant multicultural staff representing many different countries, cultures and languages.

UOW is in a fortunate position where we have a very rich tapestry of community, culture and society that embodies our diverse modern nation and in doing so, we embrace and value the skills and attributes that people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds bring to our campus and community. We have developed principles that promote inclusive practices to ensure that our workplace is culturally safe and inclusive, and supports the various needs, backgrounds, ethnicities, abilities and other distinct characteristics of our people, with respect, sensitivity and understanding.

Regardless of beliefs, language spoken, religion or cultural background, our vision is for all staff and students to feel they belong here and are empowered to achieve their full potential.

We recognise that cultivating a collaborative mindset where a range of perspectives, disciplines and expertise is respected and given a seat at the table is essential to shaping our values-based culture.

Racism. It stops with me.

The University of Wollongong has joined the Australian Human Rights Commission’s ‘Racism. It stops with me’ campaign to promote awareness and encourage everyone to see what they can do to help eradicate racism. The University supports a strong diverse organisation in which everyone regardless of race can bring their true self to work in a safe and inclusive environment.

Racism stops because of the actions we take individually and collectively. We all have a role to play in taking action against racism wherever we see or hear it and supporting initiatives to stop it from happening. This campaign invites all Australians to reflect on what they can do to counter racism wherever it happens.
