Travel advice during the UCI 2022 Road World Championships

From 18-25 September Wollongong will play host to one of the world’s biggest sporting events UCI 2022 Road World Championships

Athletes and fans from around the world will travel to Wollongong for eight days of racing, with an expected 300,000 spectators and 10,000 international visitors in attendance and another 300 million tuning in across the globe.  While this is an incredible opportunity to see some of the world’s best athletes up close and showcase our city on the world stage, the scale of the event operations will have an impact on access to UOW’s Wollongong and Innovation Campus throughout the course of the week.

 Impacts to Wollongong Campus

These impacts include expected traffic and parking congestion, limited pedestrian access and delays getting to campus. Specifically impacts include:

  • University Avenue will be closed from 19-25 September, with campus access via Robsons Road.
  • The North Gong bus shuttle from North Wollongong station will not be running throughout the week and instead will be replaced with modified Gong shuttle route from Wollongong Station to Wollongong campus.   Refer to the  TfNSW UCI Shuttle map for details on the revised routes.
  • Other bus services to the campus may also be impacted.  Updated bus timetables and routes will appear in the Trip Planner two weeks out from the event. For bus service disruption information, check travel alerts or use the Trip Planner.
  • Pedestrian’s will be able to access our Wollongong campus from North Wollongong station, however, please be mindful of safety and cross only when it is deemed safe by UCI officials.
  • Parking on campus will be impacted due to UCI volunteer hubs being based at our campuses. Carparks that will be impacted are the P8 and the P2 carpark – limited parking will be available in these locations.

 Impacts to Innovation Campus

  • Squires Way will be closed from 17-25 September, with campus access via Montague Street.
  • Volunteer training will start on UOW’s Innovation Campus from 21 August and will impact parking availability on this day.
  • A modified free Gong Shuttle will be running to the Innovation Campus.
  • Parking on campus will be impacted due to UCI volunteer hubs being based at our campuses. Carparks that will be impacted at Innovation campus are the P5 and the grassed overflow – limited parking will be available in these locations.

While both campuses will still be accessible throughout the week, travel times may vary and there is expected to be traffic congestion on alternative routes. Check  the UCI website for  local road closures.

Both professional and academic staff at both campuses have been are advised to work and teach remotely if practical during the week, with only essential student-facing services taking place on campus.

If you must travel to campus please plan your trip, allow plenty of additional travel time, and stay tuned to the Wollongong2022 website for updates.
