Welcome to the July 2019 edition of the Academic Portfolio Update. I am very pleased to share with you a sample of the many outstanding achievements that have occurred within the DVC(A) portfolio during the last quarter. As always, I hope that you draw a great deal of inspiration from our student and staff profiles, all of whom do amazing things.
At the University level we have now finalised the 2030 and Beyond white paper, which articulates a longer-term collective vision and aspiration for the University of Wollongong. If you have not yet read this document I urge you to do so. With UOW’s future always top of mind, I have recently commissioned a major external review of our Learning, Teaching and Curriculum (LTC) division to ensure that it is sustainable and fit for purpose through the delivery of high-impact leadership in curriculum innovation and staff development, amongst other critical priorities. UOW is determined to further enhance its national and international leadership position in learning and teaching excellence, for the benefit of our students and their future careers.
I was invited to attend a recent meeting in London to present our approach towards recognising and rewarding university teaching. This meeting was attended by some 50 leading international universities from across the globe. There was a great deal of interest in our well-established integrated Academic Performance framework, and in particular, the recent enhancements to our policy, which have facilitated appropriate and fair recognition of well-rounded teaching focussed staff. It was evident that many universities and indeed national governments, are at an early stage of development and implementation.
One of the key challenges facing the Higher Education sector globally is digital transformation. UOW is taking this challenge very seriously and decisively. The Library’s digital dexterity story is an outstanding example of best practice. It highlights how we can meet such challenges through innovative design principles that strike a balance between technology solutions and the human dimensions of University education environments.
I hope you enjoy this quarter’s stories of innovation and excellence.
