When David Walker was six years old he would travel with his family early every morning to take his father to work in Wollongong. He would look up at the coal mine lights that littered the Illawarra escarpment and be drawn to them. While growing up he was told by numerous people that he couldn’t be a mining engineer unless he was the son of a miner.
Contrary to this engrained notion and after some encouragement to follow his desired path at a career’s fair, David’s dream to work in the mining industry came to fruition after obtaining a Mining Engineering degree - and later his MBA both at UOW, and postgraduate qualifications in education.
He went on to work in the mining industry for 25 years and in 2010, David started his own mining consulting company. It wasn’t long before he decided it was time to combine his profession with his passion for education - in 2015, he joined UOW’s academic staff as a Mining Engineering lecturer, to help expand the hearts and minds of our future engineers.
