Dr Elizabeth Magassy has been in full time general practice in Wollongong after graduating from the University of Sydney in 1978 and spending four years as an intern, resident and registrar at the Wollongong and Port Kembla Hospitals. For ten years she worked in general practice obstetrics, delivering around one thousand babies.
Dr Magassy has been a member of the New South Wales General Practice Council and has served as a member of the Professional Services Review Board. She is a past president of the Illawarra Medical Association, and a former chair of the Illawarra Division of General Practice (2001-2004), Radio Doctors Illawarra and the Figtree Private Hospital Medical Advisory Committee.
From 1999 until 2016 Dr Magassy appeared in a regular health segment on local ABC radio as Dr Liz, and now interviews as an expert for current affairs on demand.
In 2005 she was appointed as a Clinical Associate Professor in the Graduate School of Medicine at the University of Wollongong.
Dr Magassy joined the University of Wollongong’s Council in 2010. At the October 2019 Council meeting, the University Council re-elected Dr Magassy to the position of Deputy Chancellor
Dr Magassy is also a past president of the Illawarra Dog Training Club, and current co-owner with her husband of two golden retrievers.
