Introduction

I am Dean of Research and a Professor of Applied Mathematics (Level E) at the University of Wollongong.

Some of my roles include

Fellow of the Australian Mathematical Society (FAustMS).

Deputy Chair, Society for Australian and NZ Industrial and Applied Mathematics, ( ANZIAM ).

Member, selection panel for the DEST Endeavour Awards . There are many categories of awards, involving scholarships, research fellowships and professional development.

I was Director of the Mathematics and Statistics in Industry Study Group (MISG), 2007-9. The MISG conference is an industry clinic where industry partners have their problems solved by the conference delegates. The UOW meetings were

(MISG2009) , held 27-31st Jan. 2009.
(MISG2008) , held 26th Jan. -1st Feb. 2008.
(MISG2007) , held 5-9th Feb. 2007.

This type of conference has a wide and successful history. The Oxford Mathematics in Industry Study Groups website lists all the past and future MISG meeting held around the world. The MISG Proceedings are also available for download.

Research

I gained a PhD in Applied Mathematics from the University of Adelaide in 1988 and have published about 60 research papers and have also successfully supervised nine Masters/PhD students on various topics in Applied Mathematics. My ISI citation summary shows 50 articles, with 250 citations and a Hirsch factor of H=8.

My research areas are

Nonlinear optics , such as the propagation of solitary waves in nematic liquid crystals
Nonlinear waves Solitary wave evolution and interaction for higher-order versions of integrable equations, such as Korteweg-de Vries equation, Nonlinear Schrodinger equation and the Hirota equation,
Combustion theory and mathematical chemistry.

- Seminar presented to TITR and IMMaCS during 2002, "High performance computing: a tool for research scientists", .ps or .pdf . This talk focuses on some research areas in applied mathematics and telecommunications which use hpc.
- Seminar presented to Mechanical Engineering during 2004, "Using Abaqus on Barossa", .pdf . This talk details how to use the finite element package Abaqus on the ac3 147 node Linux cluster, Barossa.
- Seminar/workshop presented by Dr. Achim Casties at UOW during April 2005, "hpc at ac3", .pdf . This talk details how to use the hpc machines based at ac3.
