Abacus:  an OLAP/MDDB research prototype

As part of DSL's research on OLAP technologies, we developed an application called Abacus. It was designed to provide an interface to a variety of External Statistical Data - the sort of data provided by National Statistical Agencies, like the Australian Bureau of Statistics and Statisitcs Canada;  International Agencies, like the UN and the World Bank; and by various commecial organisations.

The present version of Abacus contains the 1991 Australian census, sufficiently complex data for our research needs.

Abacus was built using a product called Gentia and is intrinsically linked to that product, so it cannot be downloaded. Fortunately, Abacus is web-based, so you can use it online (if the server is running ;-) by clicking on this link:

Run Abacus

If the server is not running or if you have a problem, contact Peter Hyland at: phyland@uow.edu.au
