SMS Novara in Sydney, 1858

Chronology

The Novara's voyage had begun at Trieste on 30 April 1857. She returned to her home port on 26 August 1859.

Friday 5

The Novara, 44 gun Austrian Imperial sloop of war (frigate), arrives in Sydney Harbour from Shanghai (11 August), coming to anchor off Garden Island at 5.30pm. A copy of the Australian German Gazette for Saturday, 6 November was immediately dispersed among the crew.

Saturday 6

Commodore Wüllestorf-Urbair, Captain Pöck and head of the scientific contingent Karl Scherzer call on the Governor General, Sir William Denison.

Scherzer spends the day with Wilhelm Kirchner, visiting the Observatory and Botanical Gardens. Also meets the Scott family at Kirchner's.

Joseph Selleny at the Scott family farm, Ash Island, Hunter River.

Scherzer visits Stuart Donaldson, Charles Cowper and John Robertson.

Wilhelm Kirchner writes to the Colonial Secretary seeking permission for the Novara to use the Cockatoo Island dock. Col Sec letter 58/4022.

Tuesday 9

Scherzer visits George Bennett and the Australian Museum, where they are given a tour by George French Angas.

Governor Denison letter to Sir Roderick Murchison re Hochstetter as geologist for New Zealand.

Wednesday 10

Scherzer spends day at Elizabeth Bay, with W.S. Macleay.

Saturday 13

Scherzer visits the French consul, M. Sentis. Writes two letters to the Australian Museum, via Governor Denison.

12.30pm - the Novara enters FitzRoy Dry Dock for repairs. Stays until the 20th.

Scherzer visits Sir Daniel Cooper at Rose Bay.

Tuesday 16

7am - The Commodore and Scherzer visit the FitzRoy Dock on Cockatoo Island to view the Novara, plus its prison.

A Novara Party (WU, Scherzer, Zelebor, Selleny and Kraus) sets off by rail for Campbelltown. Met there by William Macarthur and taken to Camden Park, where they stay the evening.

Wednesday 17

Party given a tour of Camden Park then back to Campbelltown at 10am. Hire horses and carriage for trip to Illawarra. Arrive at Appin, where they stay overnight in the Governor Bourke's Inn.

Thursday 18

From Appin to Wollongong via Brogo homestead. En route meet up with William Macarthur and Freddy Bowman. Party arrive at Wollongong at 3pm and take up residence in the Brighton Hotel. Meet Edward Smith Hill there and are taken to the Aboriginal camp of Tullimbah's tribe.

Australian Museum Trustees meet and discuss Novara visit plus items for exchange.

Friday 19

Kangaroo hunt arranged for party in vicinity of Fairy Meadow Farm, Illawarra. Party dines in the evening at the Brighton. Zelebor taken with a fever.

George French Angas of the Australian Museum writes to Scherzer.

Saturday 20

Party visits Osborne Wallsend coal mine, Mount Keira and Selleny takes some more Aboriginal sketches. Due to bad weather, the party is unable to catch 1pm steamer to Sydney, so WU, Scherzer and Selleny return overland, leaving Wollongong at 3.30pm. They arrive late at Brogo and spend the night.

6.30am - the Novara comes out of the FitzRoy Dry Dock; anchors off Cockatoo Island.

Sunday 21

Selleny sketches at Bargo and Broughton Pass. Party arrives in Campbelltown at 1pm, then catch a train to Sydney, where they arrive at 6.30pm.

Scherzer and WU spend evening in the Australian Club. Entertained by Mlle. Rawack.

Monday 22

Zelebor, Kraus and Hill return to Sydney at 3am on the steamer.

Scherzer visits Bennett and Angas at the Australian Museum.

Evening concert at Sydney Exchange, given by Sydney Philharmonic Society.

Tuesday 23

Selleny sketches in Macleay's garden, Darling Point, Sydney.

Lord Mayor' Return Fancy Dress Ball at Prince of Wales Theatre.

Wednesday 24

7am - Novara towed by steamer back to Palmer's Cove, near Garden Island.

Hot and 'brickfielder'.

Scherzer visits the Australian Museum where material is obtained and exchanged. George French Angas of the Australian Museum writes to Scherzer.

A welcome to the crew of the HIMS Novara is given by the German residents of Sydney, with a party on board and presentation of an address.

Thursday 25

Scherzer works on Degotardi proofs of Measurements article in the morning, and attend the prorogation of Parliament in the afternoon.

Novara Dinner at the German Club, Wynyard Square.

Friday 26

Scherzer visits the Plunketts in the evening.

Saturday 27

Novara fires 21-gun salute in honour of birth of Crown Prince Rudolf. Festive breakfast on board, attended by Kirchners, Scotts, Madame Rawack and J. Degotardi.

Sunday 28

Rainy. Scherzer working on Measurements article.

Monday 29

Rain. Novara Ball postponed to Tuesday.

Selleny produces a number of watercolours of Illawarra Aborigines and a New Zealander who was part of the Illawarra party.
