An Assessment Study into the Impact of the Australian Health Privacy Legislation on the Secondary Use of Health Information

PURPOSE OF THE RESEARCH
This is an invitation to participate in a study conducted by researchers at the University of Wollongong. This research is being undertaken as part of the dissertation requirements of the Doctor of Philosophy. The purpose of the research is to investigate impact of the Australian Health Information Privacy Legislation on the access of health information for health and medical research. The study also wishes to ascertain the effects of the Australian Health Information Privacy Legislation on privacy protection.
METHOD AND REQUESTS
If you choose to be included, you will be asked to participate in a survey. This survey will assess your perceptions and experiences of the impact of the Australian Health Privacy Legislation on the access of health information for health and medical research. The questions asked will focus on the following five dimensions: workflow, workload, awareness, practicability, and privacy protection.
POSSIBLE RISKS, INCONVENIENCES AND DISCOMFORTS
Apart from the 15 minutes of your time to complete the survey, we can foresee no risks for you. Your involvement in the study is voluntary and you may withdraw your participation from the study at any time and withdraw any data that you have provided to that point. Consent is deemed to have been obtained by the completion and return of the survey. Refusal to participate in the study will not affect your relationship with the University of Wollongong.
BENEFITS OF THE RESEARCH
This research will provide an assessment on the various privacy laws’ influence on health and medical research by providing a better understanding of the effects (benefits and risks) and whether if the privacy laws have met their goals in maintaining privacy while facilitating research. Findings from the study will be published in a PhD thesis and possibly published in scholarly journals. Confidentiality is assured, and you will not be identified in any part of the research.

This study has been reviewed by the Human Research Ethics Committee (Social Science, Humanities and Behavioural Science) of the University of Wollongong.
