About Me

Welcome! This is the personal page of Kwan-Wu Chin (). I am originally from Kota Kinabalu, the capital city of Sabah, Malaysia. I graduated from Curtin University of Technology, Western Australia, with First Class Honours. I also received the top honours student prize. I then completed my PhD with distinction and was awarded the chancelor's commendation. My supervisor was Mohan Kumar (now at RIT@USA).

I spent a few years as a Senior Research Engineer at the Motorola Australia Research Center (MARC). Interesting projects I have worked on included ad-hoc routing protocols, low-power sensor MACs, zero-configuration home networking using IPv6, and bandwidth managers for wireless LANs. I filed nine United States patents, was a voting member of the IEEE 802.15.3 working group and won a USD $3.6M grant from DARPA@USA.

I am currently an Associate Professor affiliated with the School of Electrical, Computer and Telecommunications Engineering (SECTE), University of Wollongong. I have been the Head of Postgraduate Studies (HPS) for SECTE for more than ten years, and also the co-founder/director of Wireless Technologies Lab (WTL) since 2008. Previously, I was the Research Integrity Advisor (RIA) and Deputy Head of School (Research) for SECTE. My lab has a history of close collaboration with the industry (notably, Motorola and Agere), ARC successes, patent filings and high quality publications. From 2017-2019, I served as the inagural director of the Signals, Information and Communications Research Institute (SICOM), which is comprised of 18 academics and five major research centers/labs spanning image/video processing, wireless communications to instrumentation and sensors.

Research Areas

My interests lie in the general area of resource allocation. Here resource may be the energy, bandwidth or storage of a node/network. To optimize resource(s), I apply optimization theory, graph theory, control theory, AI and machine learning techniques to name a few. The following bullets list some current areas of interest:
