Summer Undergraduate Research Opportunity

SURGE into a research career! Summer Undergraduate Research enhancing Gender Equity (SURGE) is a paid summer research opportunity for undergraduate women at UOW majoring in science, mathematics, or engineering who are interested in applying computational skills to environmental questions. Apply here!

The Program

• Complete 8-10 week full time research project over the summer break (December-February)
• A $300 stipend per week for the duration of the project
• Free accommodation on campus for the duration of the project
• Professional development and social opportunities with the SMAH summer scholars

The Project

The SURGE scholar will join a vibrant group of researchers at the UOW Centre for Atmospheric Chemistry to conduct research at the nexus of environmental science, climate, public health and computational modelling. The project will involve using measurements of air pollutants to better understand the links between climate and air quality in southeast Australia and to evaluate a new, state-of-the-science atmospheric model developed specifically for Australia.

Eligibility

Applicants must be undergraduate women studying at UOW and should* meet the following criteria:
• Majoring in any science, mathematics, or engineering degree in the Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health (SMAH) or the Faculty of Engineering & Information Sciences (EIS)
• Completed at least 1 year (48 credit points) of university subjects
• Have a strong desire to undertake an independent research project
• Have a keen interest in learning or further developing computational skills

*If you meet most but not all of the criteria, please go ahead and apply!

FAQ:

Why is this program specificially for women?
Simply put, women are still significantly under-represented in academic and research careers. The reasons for this are complex, and a number of programs exist to redress the imbalance and give more opportunities to pursue research careers. This is one of them.

How much programming experience do I need for this project?
No programming experience is required; however, preference will be given to applicants who have had at least some exposure to programming and computing concepts. That may be through subjects at the university (e.g., introductory Python in EESC102), online tutorials, self-taught, etc. If you have never had an opportunity to learn any programming but you are keen to develop skills in this area, go ahead and apply. If selected, you will be given some tutorials to work through before commencing the project.

Who is funding this project?
Funding for this project comes from a L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Fellowship
