Call for Papers: Second Australian Workshop on Intelligent Scheduling

Held in conjunction with the Eleventh Australian Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence (AI'98)

July 13-17, 1998, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia
Workshop date: July 14, 1998

NEW: Revised submission deadline: June 25, 1998.

Background

Scheduling, the task of assigning resources to activities in some (ideally) optimal temporal sequence, is a ubiquitous and computationally hard problem. Research in intelligent scheduling seeks solutions to this problem through the applications of AI techniques such as constraint-based reasoning which have been found to be effective in real-world scheduling problems characterized by computational intractability, the need to handle complex input knowledge and multiple, often conflicting optimization criteria. This workshop seeks to provide a forum for highlighting and discussing research and development efforts in this area, by bringing together academic researchers and practitioners from industry. This will be the second workshop in this series, following the success of the First Australian Workshop on Intelligent Scheduling, organized at the University of Wollongong in December 1997 (click here for a program outline).

Areas of Interest/Workshop Goals

Both basic and applied research in the area of intelligent scheduling are of interest to the workshop. Submissions are encouraged on all issues concerning the design, development and practical deployment of intelligent scheduling systems. A broad spectrum of AI technologies are of interest, including constraint-based techniques, knowledge-based systems technologies, genetic algorithms, neural networks etc. Submissions comparing such techniques with traditional operations research (OR) techniques or discussing the integration of OR techniques in intelligent scheduling systems are also welcome.

Workshop Format

This will be a one-day workshop and will include approximately eight to ten 30 minute presentations based on the submitted papers. The workshop is also likely to include invited presentations by distinguished researchers in the area.

Submissions

Submissions are invited in the form of full papers with no more that 5000 words. In the first instance, the submitted abstracts will be compiled in the form of a University of Wollongong, Dept. of Business Systems Technical Report. Depending on the nature and quality of submissions, a more formal refereed academic publication may emerge from the workshop proceedings.
For those who wish to participate without presenting their work, a brief email message expressing interest would suffice.

Workshop Chair

Dr. Aditya K. Ghose, Decision Systems Lab, Dept. of Business Systems, University of Wollongong.
