Brief Introduction:

Garry joined Woolyungah Indigenous Centre as a member of the academic staff in mid-2005 after working for over a decade in Indigenous affairs in New South Wales, advising governments on housing, arts and cultural development matters. He teaches across Indigenous studies and Creative Arts and is currently working to enhance the capacity of Indigenous arts education at UoW.

Garry is a practicing visual artist and has exhibited locally, nationally and internationally. In 2000 he won the Australian Indigenous Heritage Art Award, Art of Place, in the works on paper category for a charcoal drawing titled Thirroul. Garry is currently pursuing a practice-led PhD in visual arts, at the Australian National University, focusing on the role of visual arts in urban Indigenous identity and community cultural development.

Academic awards:

2008 Australian Endeavour Scholarship, to undertake research into developments in contemporary Maori Arts through Massey University in Palmerston North, New Zealand.

2003 Australian-American Fulbright postgraduate scholarship, to undertake research in contemporary Native American visual arts through the University of New Mexico, USA.

2001 Australian National University, Nugget Coombs Honours Scholarship.

Community engagement:

Garry began his arts practice in the late 1980s with the Western Sydney based community arts cooperative Garage Graphix. Since then he has been actively involved with community based arts and cultural development. Over the last five years he has been engaged in regionally based arts development and was pivotal in the development of Pallingjang 4, a south coast Indigenous arts project aimed at providing artists with opportunities to increase their skills base while promoting their respective practices. This project was coordinated by the Wollongong City Gallery, with generous financial support from Federal and NSW State grants.

Currently Garry is collaborating with his colleague, Dr Michael Adams, to produce a book on contemporary Indigenous arts from the south coast. This project has been enabled with the support of a University of Wollongong Community Engagement grant as well as an Australian Regional Arts Fund grant.
