Brief Introduction:
I come from a multi disciplinary background and hold a Bachelor of Arts in English with First Class Honours and a doctorate in Communications and Cultural Studies from the School of Social Sciences, Media and Communications. In 2006, I received an OCTAL teaching award for my contribution to teaching and learning. My PhD research was an analysis of surfing and beach culture in Australia as this relates to race and masculinity in the production of national identity. This work provides a counter argument to dominant discourses of nation and identity through a range of texts that examine Indigenous surfers’ relationship to surfing and beach culture.
Research Interests:
My research interests include critical and cultural theory, the study of literary and film texts, Indigenous histories, issues of gender in relation to nation and identity, and critical pedagogy in Higher Education. My research informs my writing and teaching and contributes to subject development in the Indigenous Studies programme.
