Brief Introduction:

I am a Lecturer at WIC and the co-ordinator of ABST200, Aboriginal History Since Invasion and ABST 202 Indigenous Self-Representation in Contemporary Texts. I come from a multi disciplinary background and hold a Bachelor of Arts in English with First Class Honours and a doctorate in Communications and Cultural Studies from the School of Social Sciences, Media and Communications. I have extensive experience as a teacher at undergraduate level across a range of disciplines in the humanities. In 2006, I received an OCTAL award for teaching and learning.

Research Interests:

My PhD research focuses on the discursive aspects of surfing culture in Australia as they relate to race and masculinity in the production of national identity. My thesis explores the relationship between representations of the beach, as a national cultural symbol, surfing, and masculinity and nation. I argue that despite the dominance of mainstream views of nation and identity, oppositional ways of conceiving nation(s) can be located in Indigenous surfing culture as it is practiced in contemporary Australia.

My research interests include theories of text, identity and representation, and how these inform contemporary race relations in Australia. My interest in the area of critical theory informs my writing and teaching and contributes to subject development in the Aboriginal Studies programme.

Publications:

‘Aboriginal Surfing: Reinstating Culture and Country’, International Journal of Humanities, Vol.4, Issue 1.2006.

Forthcoming:

‘Developing a Critical Pedagogy Using Aboriginal Short Film: Introducing Wayne Blair’s The Djarns Djarns and Black Talk’.

In progress:

Recontextualising the award: Towards a more critical teaching praxis.

I am currently working on publishing various chapters of my PhD research.
