Freddy Fricke Scholarship Account
In 2002, the NSW Aboriginal Land Council made a grant to Charities Aid Foundation to launch its new scholarship program for Aboriginal students who wish to study finance and commerce disciplines in tertiary institutions in NSW. The program is named after former Bondi Junction resident, Freddy Fricke, who donated his property to the NSW Aboriginal Land Council upon his death in 2002. Charities Aid Foundation (CAF Community Fund) operates this program which has already attracted donations from both government and commerce sectors.
Scholarship grants
The maximum scholarship per annum will be AUD$10,000 When approved, the funds will be made as a grant to the University which will be requested to allocate the grants towards the successful applicant's account. Generally, lower maximum limits will apply if the student lives at home.
A NSWALC Freddy Fricke scholarship can normally cover the following:
- University fees
- Books, stationary and equipment
- Contribution towards travel expenses (if the students lives away from home)
- Living allowance (subject to Abstudy conditions)

Ken Brindle Memorial Awards
The awards were established in 1989 in recognition of the outstanding contribution of the late Ken Brindle, a former President of the Aboriginal Education Council (NSW) Inc., to Aboriginal education. Ken had a special interest in increasing opportunities for mature-age Aboriginal students. Ken had a vision of a society in which it was possible for all people, regardless of colour or creed, to live in harmony without poverty or exploitation.
The aims of the awards are to assist and encourage Aboriginal students with potential for higher education, but who, without support, would not be able to continue their studies
Eligibility:
- Up to eight tertiary awards, worth $3,000.00 each, are available to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander who are:
- Accepted for enrolment in an approved full-time course of study at a tertiary institution in for both undergraduate and postgraduate applicants.
- Aged 19 years or more at 01 January (three awards must go to students between 21 and 25 years of age)
NSW Nursing and Midwifery Scholarship Fund
A range of scholarships are provided by the NSW Department of Health for nursing and midwifery students in NSW. The level of scholarship is determined each year.

Teacher Education Scholarships
Scholarships are available for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders to help get more Indigenous teacher into our schools. These scholarships are available for primary or any secondary teaching subject area.
Scholarships can be for 1, 2, 3, or 4 years and are available to students who are or will be studying an approved pre-service teacher training course at a NSW or ACT tertiary institution. Eligible students include those undertaking an undergraduate or postgraduate teacher education program.
The scholarship cover the cost of HECS fees for subjects successfully completed while studying for a teacher qualification. A training allowance of $1,500.00 for each year of the scholarship is also provided to meet the costs of incidentals, textbooks and student administration fees.
On successful completion of studies, the scholarship holder will be granted permanent employment in a NSW public school in Sydney's western or south-western suburbs or in a non-coastal rural area of New South Wales

The Puggy Hunter Memorial Scholarship Scheme
The Scheme was established in recognition of Dr Arnold ('Puggy') Hunter's significant contribution to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and in his previous role as Chair of the National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (NACCHO).
The aim of the Scholarship is to help address the under-representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in health professions and assist in increasing the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with professional health qualifications.
Applicants must identify as and be able to prove their Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander status.
Selection will be based on criteria including demonstrated interest and experience in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health, leadership qualities and financial need. This selection is not based on academic achievement.
Eligibility
The Puggy Hunter Memorial Scholarship Scheme is funded by the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing, and administered by Royal College of Nursing, Australia (RCNA).
Scholarships will be available for the start of the 2009 academic year and are worth up to $7,500 per year for part time study and up $15,000 per year for full time study.
Scholarships will be available for students who wish to study at the undergraduate level in the areas of:
- Aboriginal Health Worker;
- Allied Health (excluding pharmacy);
- Dentistry/Oral Health;
- Health Service Management;
- Health Promotion/Education;
- Medicine;
- Mental Health;
- Midwifery; and
- Nursing.

The RSL Captain Reg Saunders Memorial Scholarship
The RSL established this tertiary level scholarship for drug and alcohol abuse studies in 1992 for students of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander background. The scholarship provides for a $3,000.00 annual grant, up to a maximum of four years of study.
In the development of the Scholarship, consultation with ATSIC revealed the urgent need for qualified substance abuse professionals among the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
Eligibility
The scholarship requires the applicant to either major or specialise in the Substance Abuse area in one of the following targeted courses: Bachelor of Psychology; Bachelor of Applied Science (Psychology major); Bachelor of Nursing; Bachelor of Social Work; Bachelor of Health Education. Where courses do not specifically contain subjects or units dealing with substance abuse, the students must be able to provide scope for such studies in their elective subjects and field placements.
The closing date for applications is 31 October of each year for studies commencing the following year.

John Koowarta Reconciliation Law Scholarship
The Scholarship is awarded annually to an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander students enrolled in a Bachelor of Laws degree at an Australian Tertiary Institution.
Successful applicants are awarded $5,500 a year towards their studies.
One scholarship will be awarded each year and recipients may re-apply in subsequent years until completing their degrees.
