UOW Student Experience Questionnaire 2011 (SEQ11)
The annual Student Experience Questionnaire (SEQ) analyses the trends in the attitudes and experiences of onshore University of Wollongong students. It contains three core questions relating to overall satisfaction, teaching and course quality as well as questions assessing student perceptions of safety, learning outcomes, research opportunities, service access, lifestyle and their sense of belonging and connectedness to the University and their community.
SEQ11 was conducted during May 2011 and the findings are based on 6,924 individual responses (a response rate of 33%). We achieved a response ratio of 79% : 21% Domestic to International student which shows a slight under-representation of the 2011 International Student population ratio of 75% : 25%. All campuses achieved a response rate equal to or greater than 25%.
We received 9,523 responses to three open-ended questions relating to your ideas about what we are doing well (5,059 responses) and the areas most needing improvement (4,464 responses).
In general, scores were high, with positive results for satisfaction with the overall student experience, teaching and course quality, and students recommending the University to others. Results remained slightly lower for international and postgraduate students and the University is addressing this issue. The majority of students felt safe when on campus and within the community in which they live while they are studying.
The most common positive aspects of the student experience were the social aspects, learning new skills and positive interactions with academic staff. Areas for improvement included class time and subject flexibility as well as the provision of information and advice to students.
